Liverpool target stalling over new contract

Liverpool target Xabi Alonso has stalled over signing a new Real Madrid contract, sparking speculation he could make a return to Anfield, writes The Express.

Alonso’s contract at the Bernabeu is due to run out in the summer and talks over a fresh one have come to an impasse.

The same paper revealed a few weeks ago that Real had been lining up Madrid’s Marco Verratti as a potential replacement for Alonso if he were to depart.

Coy

Alonso’s father, Periko, has been quite coy about his son’s future.

“What he wants to do is to wait a bit to see what happens and how things go, and then, when the time is right, he’ll make the appropriate decision,” Periko told Marca.

“It’s as simple as that – there’s nothing else to it.”

The Spaniard would be welcomed with open arms to Anfield if were to make a return, as he was fans favourite during his previous spell on Merseyside.

Alonso has made over 120 La Liga appearances for Los Blancos since joining in 2009.
