Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has got the team flying high this season owing to modernising the side’s traditional pass and move system that fired their domination of the 1970’s and 80’s, according to a source at Anfield.
Liverpool’s historical mantra of pass and move, which was put into practice during the club's glory days of the 1970’s and 80’s; is focused around players moving the ball quickly amongst one another and getting back into position once they are no longer in possession of it.
During their era of prolific success spanning two decades, Liverpool were League champions ten times, won the European Cup four times, the FA Cup three times, the League Cup four times, and the UEFA Cup twice, along with other honours including a number of Charity Shield wins.
A source close to Anfield explained how Rodgers has taken the basis of this old philosophy and modernised it in his campaign to recreate a dominant winning Liverpool side.
He told [football] direct news :
“Brendan Rodgers has instilled a strong belief in the Liverpool squad, and also the fans, that they can be a team of champions once again.
“He has done this in a number of ways. The key one being, that he has carried on the traditional Liverpool philosophy of pass and move, which made the side so successful in the 1970’s.
“He has got hold of it and shaped it in order for it work for the modern day Premier League.”
He explained that the game of football has evolved and said a requirement has occurred for all football clubs and managers, not just Liverpool and Rodgers, to move with the times and adapt playing styles accordingly.
“Modernisation of the system at Liverpool has been necessary because the football is not played like it was in the 1970’s and 1980’s. The game is not the same.
“This applies to all clubs in the Premier League, Championship and other leagues.”
