Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina says he is very happy at Anfield, playing down reports that he could join Barcelona in the summer.
Pepe Reina joined Liverpool from Villarreal in 2005. Pepe Reina has rubbished speculation that he could join Barcelona or Real Madrid in the summer.
The Liverpool goalkeeper’s future has been a source of constant speculation in recent months, with the Spain international enduring a below-par season.
With Victor Valdés set to leave Barça in 2014, Reina has been touted as a possible replacement, but the former Atlético Madrid star insists that he is happy on Merseyside.
“Any talk of me joining Barça is just speculation,” Reina told Marca. “I’ve got a contract at Liverpool and I’m very happy here.
“I’m sure Víctor Valdés will have his reasons for deciding to leave Barcelona. I respect him. He’s my team-mate and friend. He’ll be leaving with his head held high, as he’s given his all to Barcelona.”
Meanwhile, Barcelona’s rivals Real Madrid have experienced their share of goalkeeper drama this term with José Mourinho and Iker Casillas falling out.
The Spain captain is currently sidelined with a fractured bone in his right hand, but Reina was also quick to dismiss any talk of moving to Madrid.
“I don’t know what happens at Real Madrid,” he added. “José Mourinho is the one who has to make the decisions. Anyway, [Iker] Casillas was only left out for two games.”
Reina also believes Liverpool striker Luis Suárez will stay at Anfield, with Brendan Rodgers braced to fend off interest in the Uruguayan this summer.
“I can’t see Luis Suárez playing in La Liga ,” Reina said. “I think he’ll stay at Liverpool. He’s a great player. So are [Gareth] Bale and a few others in the Premier League.”
